Part One: Spring Ahead

In Ayurveda, we are always staying present and looking ahead. We could focus entirely on the seasons and not even worry about the doshas or any other fun Sanskrit words and concepts. To be well, we could simply stay present and look ahead seasonally.

For example:

Presently, we’d be looking at spring. Where do we always go out of balance in the spring? Do you always get a cold or a flu or a respiratory infection? Do you always have an upswing in allergies? Do you get sluggish and lazy? Do you get extra tired? What are your tendencies in the spring? And what have you learned, and what can you learn now, to help manage and mitigate spring congestion in body, mind, and spirit? What are your lifestyle practices contributing to these imbalances? What are the dietary choices that are contributing to these imbalances? How can you uplift and balance your tendencies in spring?

Looking ahead, we’d be looking at summer. Where do we always go out of balance in the summer? Do you always get hot and irritable? Do you get frustrated more easily? Do you get a summer cold or allergies? Do you get ill every August? What are your tendencies and weaknesses in the summer? And what have you learned, and what can you learn now, to help manage and mitigate excess summer heat and boiling fluids in body, mind, and spirit? What are your lifestyle practices contributing to these imbalances? What are the dietary choices that are contributing to these imbalances? How can you cool and balance your tendencies in the summer?

Now, the tricky part is to manage these current spring tendencies without setting yourself up for overheating in the summer. Here are some tips, but remember, everyone is unique and special. You know yourself really well; the art is paying attention and listening. Stay warm for spring, but not overly warm. Wear appropriate layers to keep warm, eat warm meals, and spice things up to kick up digestion and warmth. If summer isn’t a problem, spice it up. If summer IS a potential problem, you might want to watch too much pungent and hot spices and foods right now. Too much spice can set us up for an overheated summer. Just a quick example. Think presently and look ahead.
