Svadhyaya: Self Study

The unexamined life is not worth living. –Socrates

Self Study, the fourth of the Niyamas and our practice for the week, is the essence of the above. Laying out the mat (metaphorical or not) and doing the practice (metaphorical or not). Out of the practice we learn. We cultivate knowledge about ourselves, and then that knowledge can become wisdom. Wisdom of ourselves. Self Study. It is only out of that knowledge that we can perhaps begin to really understand others and the world around us.

But you must actually do the practice (Tapas) and study the self to obtain that wisdom of who we are.

What if, after all, that is the meaning of our life? To learn as much as we can about who we are and who we are meant to be? And then puzzle out how that fits into the pieces of the world we are gifted to be part of? What is our True part in the network, the web, of life?
